About the Postcard Whisperer

Dr. Dan Gifford holds a doctorate in American history from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. His doctoral dissertation To You and Your Kin: Holiday Images from America's Postcard Phenomenon, 1907-1910 was completed in 2011. It focuses on using postcard images to understand the many issues and conflicts of the early 20th century. His other history interests include world's fairs, advertising, travel posters, dime novels, and assorted holiday ephemera. In addition to American history, his studies have focused on American visual culture and museum studies. George Mason University has awarded him the Charles and Polly Webber Outstanding Graduate Student Award; the Josephine Pacheco Award for best graduate research paper; and the McKinnon-Morton Dissertation Fellowship. He also received a Masters in American history from George Mason University, and holds a Masters in International Affairs from Washington University in St. Louis, and a Bachelors of Journalism from the University of Missouri, Columbia. He is a professional researcher and contributing historian to a variety of projects; an adjunct professor of American history; and an accomplished travel writer and photographer.
